Queen of the Morning Calm (2019)

Called “a remarkably assured first feature” (Christ Knight, The National Post) this multi award-winning film follows 29-year-old immigrant sex worker Debra (Tina Jung) and her self-aware 10-year-old daughter Mona (Eponine Lee), as they embark on a journey of emancipation. Debra attempts to escape cycles of abuse and poverty while learning to become a more nurturing mother and discovering her own self-worth.  Awarded the Women in the Director’s Chair Feature Film Award, the film has won the William F. White Reel Canadian Indie Award, the DGC Ontario Best Director Award & Special Jury Best Breakthrough Performance Award at the Canadian Film Festival; the Best Feature Award at Cinefam, Women’s International Film Festival and the Bronze Lens Festival in 2020.

The film premiered at Whistler Film Festival, screened at festivals and theatrically across Canada, had its first window on Superchannel and is distributed in the US on Showtime.

THE ROCK GARDEN (2007)

Described as “absolutely beautiful” by director Atom Egoyan, “Rock Garden: a love story” is an allegory about love, loneliness and the healing power of acceptance. Screened at over 30 festivals, it won the 2009 ELAN Award for Best Visual Effects in Short Subject, the 2008 Global Audience Award for Best Anarchy Film at Slamdance and the 2007 CBC Canadian Reflections Award.

THE AUCTION (2010)

A semi-autobiographical tale of familial sacrifice and immigrant dreams, The Auction is a poignant blend of narrative and director Gloria Ui Young Kim’s found family footage. The Auction won the Audience Choice for Best Film at the 2012 WIFT Short Film Showcase, the Audience Award at youthFEST, Best Short Film at the 2011 Sarasota Film Festival, Children’s Jury Award at the 2011 Seattle Film Festival for Children, the LIFT & Fuji Best Short Film Award at the 2010 Toronto Reel Asian Film Festival and the Audience Choice Award for Best Short Film at the 2010 TIFF Kids.

Flamenco (2015)

An impressionistic dance film about lust, loneliness and obsession, Flamenco follows the story of an outsider, Camilla. Engaged to help the Rojo Group put on a show of Carmen, things get out of hand when sparks fly between her and Alexander, the male lead and lover of young ingénue, Lola.

Flamenco won the Corus NSI Fearless Female Filmmaker Award in 2017 as well as the Charles Street Video & Toronto Reel Asian’s “So You Think You Can Pitch” Contest.
